Volvo drivers love the remote control capabilities of their key fob. They can lock and unlock their car, start the motor, and even find it using an app for smartphones.

First, place the fob on a clean work surface with the logo side facing upwards. Find the button that will let it go. Put a coin between the fob cover and the fob, then carefully pull up.

Unlocking the Door

Volvo's remote key fobs are able to unlock the doors, tailgate, and the fuel filler flap of your vehicle with a touch of one button. The remote key fobs can also turn on the ignition and set off the alarm. They can also operate the sunroof in the event that it's fitted. It's no longer necessary to look for your keys, or lose access to your vehicle.


You may not be aware of key fob features that aren't visible. One of these is the manual lock/unlock button, which you can use in the event that your key fob battery dies.

To push the manual lock/unlock button to unlock your key fob, place it with the Volvo logo side up. Find the black button that is located near the edges of the key fob body and gently press it to unlock a cover that hides a manual key blade. You'll require a flathead screwdriver, or a coin to flip this cover counterclockwise, so the arrow is aligned with "open."

The Engine is Ready to Start

But, just like any other battery-powered electronic device the key fob may lose its charge or cease working after a certain period of time. If you've noticed that your key fob is less responsive when you press the lock or unlock buttons, it's an indication that it's time to replace the battery.

You can activate this feature by using the key fob if your vehicle is equipped with a dealer-installed Engine Remote Start. The vehicle will then heat or cool to the exact temperature it was at when parked, and it will continue to run for a maximum of 15 minutes.

Take off the back cover of the key fob using your fingernail. Under the cover on a diagonal, close to the edge of the body, you'll find the button. Slide it down and to the right. The cover will come loose and slide off, revealing the manual key blade inside! If you are still unable to locate the button, search around the newly revealed manual key access area to see if there is a hidden slot or lever.

Closing the Windows

Volvo key fobs have a hidden feature that allows you to immediately roll down all windows. This is useful when trying to squeeze into a cramped parking space, or just when you need some fresh air in your cabin while driving.

To unlock the windows you need to press and hold the unlock button on your Volvo remote for four seconds. This will lower the windows and the sunroof, if there is one. When you're finished with the vehicle, you can close all windows by pressing the lock button again for four seconds.

You can also use the key fob to turn on your car's panic alarm. It will create a loud noise that will draw attention to the car and deter thieves. It will also assist you get home safely even if you've been out for the night. This feature is helpful if you reside in an area that is dangerous, or want to protect your family while away from home.

Opening the Tailgate

For instance, if you have the Hands-Free Power Liftgate with logo projection and adjustable height (if equipped) it is possible to open it by using the key fob. You can open the liftgate by pressing the button and then close it using the same button.

Turning off the Alarm

Modern key fobs provide many advantages over a regular mechanical car key. They don't always work perfectly, and the batteries can be dead. You can try programming your key fob at home if are in a rush or don't have the time to visit the store.

Set out your key fobs as well as batteries and additional keys on a clean surface. Place the key fob on the surface with the Volvo logo facing up and then find a small black button to the bottom left of the fob. Slide it to the right. The cover will fall off, revealing the mechanical key blade underneath.

You can open all the doors as well as the rear gate by pressing the unlock button on the key fob two times. The lock button also shuts the sunroof and windows (if fitted) by pressing it for 2 seconds. Connect the battery, and the alarm should stop. If it doesn't, the owners manual should contain a procedure to reset the alarm.
